GCA went on the road and took down the defending class 2A State Champs, Saluda, 34-24 on Friday night. After a quick Saluda score, the War Eagles went down and scored to cut the lead to one. GCA took the lead on their next possession and never looked back. The defense came up big to start the second half with a goal line stand, stuffing Saluda at the one yard line. The War Eagles then went on a 16 play 99 yard TD drive capped off with a 22 yard pass from Tre Robinson to Chris Rhone. The TD gave GCA a 21-11 lead. The defense then came up big again when Russell Brunson picked off the Saluda pass on the first play of the ensuing drive. Tre Robinson then ran one in from 40 yards out to put the War Eagles firmly in control 27-11. Both teams would then trade TDs, and Saluda would punch one more in with 20 seconds remaining to make the final score of 34-24.
The War Eagles leaned on the offensive line all night rushing for a school record 51 attempts. KZ Adams had 217 yards while Tre Robinson added 109. Each had two rushing TDs. Chris Rhone led the way receiving with 5 catches for 52 yards and a score.
The win moves GCA to 3-0 (3-0 in Region). The War Eagles will go on the road this Friday night to take on Eau Claire. Kickoff will be at 7:30, and we hope to see you there.
